Iheanacho exceptional in loss, Aribo grabs assist

With several Nigerian players in leagues across Europe already observing their winter break and games getting postponed across the UK due to COVID-19, KELVIN EKERETE monitored the stars in action

Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman (Leicester City)

Kelechi Iheanacho scored and provided two assists in Leicester City’s 6-3 loss to table-toppers Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in an English Premier League fixture on Sunday.

The goal was Iheanacho’s second of the season in 13 league games. The Nigeria international was in the right position to slot in the rebound after James Maddison’s shot from outside the 18-yard box had hit the bar. He had earlier provided assists for Maddison and Ademola Lookman in the 55th and 59th minute before grabbing his goal in the 65th minute to take the game to 4-3 from four goals down.

Iheanacho could have grabbed his second goal of the encounter but his shot was parried by an onrushing Ederson.

However, City took advantage of two corner kicks to extend their lead and hand them their 15th win of the season in 19 games.

Iheanacho was on for the entire duration.

His compatriot, Lookman also played the entire duration of the game. The forward was exciting throughout the duration of the game but despite getting a goal, it was not enough to get them a point on the board.

Wilfred Ndidi was, however, an unused substitute.

Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun (Rangers)

Joe Aribo continued his impressive form for Glasgow Rangers providing an assist for his side’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over St. Mirren in the Scottish Premier League on Sunday.

Aribo teed up Scot Wright for the opening goal while Alfredo Morelos scored the second in the 26th minute to see off their opponent.

The Nigeria international was on for the entire duration of the game.

His compatriot, Calvin Bassey was deployed in the central defensive position for the Gers in the encounter while Leon Balogun was not listed for the game.

Ahmed Musa (Fatih Karagumruk)

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa was not listed for Fatih Karagumruk in their 1-1 draw away to Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday.

The Eagles captain who has only previously missed one game for his club was ruled out of the game through illness.

Musa has scored once while providing two assists for Fatih this season.

Obinna Nwobodo (Goztepe), David Babajide (Adana Demirspor)

Midfielder Obinna Nwobodo was in action for the entire duration of the match as Goztepe held visiting Adana Demirspor to a 1-1 on Sunday.

Mario Balotelli put the visitors in front in the 16th minute but it was Khadim Rassoul’s own goal in the 76th minute which ensured that the hosts shared in the spoils.

David Babajide was an unused substitute for Adana in the game.
